CHAPTER NINE
LYNN
I thought driving by my auntâs house would be painful. And it is. But not in the way I expect. Itâs the changes made that cause my heart to seize up. I barely recognize the house as the one I had spent so many happy summer vacations at. Gone is the archway of carefully cultivated roses that my aunt had loved. In its place are ornamental stone lions. The flowerbeds in front have been ripped out and replaced with a poured cement front porch. It hurts to admit, but the porch is a nice touch, complete with the cozy painted metal glider.
If the house had gone to me like was promised, I wouldnât have made those modifications. No, I probably would have kept the place exactly as my aunt had left it. Mulling that over, Iâm not sure that would have been the healthy thing to do. Still, it would have been nice to have had that choice to make. Instead, the decision had been taken out of my hands.
A very familiar wave of bitterness rises in me. Anger at my father for cheating me out of my inheritance and rage at my ex-husband for the very real betrayal of our broken marriage vows. The duplicity of the two most important men in my lifeâs stabs at me. I had believed those old wounds were healed, but apparently the scars left behind are still tender.
And here I am on my way to see another man. One that has already somehow gotten under my skin.
Pulling up to the road in front of Stanâs house, the view of the bay he had told me about snags my attention first. I can easily see why he had been so taken with it. Pale blue water rose in lazy peaks, slapping at the sandy bank. Some of my tension dissipates. Exiting my truck, I walk down a charming slate walkway taking in the huge commercial brown dumpster squatting in front of the house and the weathered boards of the porch.
Before I reach the door, it opens, Stanâs bulk filling the doorway. Whatever remains of my bad mood is gone, chased away by the enormous grin splitting his face. Heâs not conventionally handsome with his rough features and gruff manners, yet at this moment Iâve never seen a more appealing man.
The connection between us, through new, draws me closer. I want to be in his personal space, to have it be our space. A genuine smile, not my professional one, pulls my mouth up in a huge, teeth baring grin.
âYouâre here,â Stan says, stepping away from the door and meeting me on the porch, his hand reaching for mine.
Enveloped in his warmth, the strength of his large hand holding mine giving me courage, I do something very unlike me. For once, being tall has its advantages. Itâs not much of a stretch for me to lean up and press my mouth to his.
He draws in a sharp inhale before relaxing into the kiss, his arms curving around me, dragging me closer to the hard heat of his chest.
